BMW Healthy Heart Initiative - Every Beat Counts

In your lifetime, your heart needs to be beat over 2 billion times! The key to a stronger heart is to take steps toward leading a healthier lifestyle. This includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, a healthy bodyweight, nicotine cessation, a responsible attitude towards alcohol, stress management, and regular health checks. Even minor changes to your lifestyle can have a positive impact on your heart. What’s more, these changes not only benefit your heart, but your overall health and wellbeing as well. It’s never too late to adopt a healthier lifestyle!

TX-64 has partnered with Canteen and the Associate Family Health Center to offer healthy living resources to Team10 members. One resource includes a monthly table at a variety of locations on campus, giving team members access to information on smoking cessation, heart-healthy diets, exercise, and stress management. Furthermore, team members can consult with a registered dietitian nutritionist, a nurse, or a health advocate to explore methods to improve their health. View the schedule below to plan your visit to an upcoming Healthy Heart table. *

It’s Not too Late to Earn 100 Wellbeing Points!

It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the year. That means the deadline to earn 100 Wellbeing points will be here before we know it. There is still plenty of time to log into your Wellbeing account to record your wellbeing activities and earn points! Here are some important reminders to consider when planning your point-earning activities:Review your health history and identify any potential issues.

  • Starting January 1, 2024, you MUST complete either an annual physical OR a health check as 40 of your 100 points. You are welcome to complete both the annual physical and health check but are only required to complete one.

  • Annual physicals should be scheduled with your previously established primary care physician—whether they are at a community office or the AFHC. The health checks (previously called biometrics) are appointments available only through the AFHC.

  • The point earning deadline is December 15, 2024. This falls on a SUNDAY this year! Keep that in mind as you schedule appointments. All activities must be manually uploaded to your wellbeing portal by the end of this day to be eligible for the wellbeing incentive. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity to upload points after the deadline.

  • If you experience any problems uploading proof of your wellbeing activities, please contact the Navigate help desk at info@navigatewell.com or (888) 282-0822.

  • Review the full activity list on your Wellbeing account or app to help you earn the remaining points after completing your annual physical or health check. You may be surprised how many activities you already do that earn points.

Those who meet program requirements by the deadline will be eligible to receive a $500/$1000 wellbeing incentive in 2025. The Wellbeing. Your Way. Program aims to reward you for taking care of yourself and being an active participant in your health and wellbeing. Don’t leave money on the table!

It’s Time to Schedule Your Annual Physical!

Annual physicals with your medical doctor are a vital part of preventive health care! This yearly check -up can help catch potential health conditions before they begin, when chances of treatment are much greater. We hope to help you best prepare by sharing what to expect, tips to schedule your visit, and how to receive your wellbeing points after your visit. Keep reading to learn more.

Here’s what you and your doctor will cover at your appointment:

  • Review your health history and identify any potential issues.

  • Check your vital signs and perform a physical exam.

  • Review/update your medications and vaccinations, as needed.

  • Test your cholesterol, blood glucose, and kidney and liver function.

  • Perform/recommend any age-appropriate cancer screenings.

How to schedule your physical:

  • Schedule with your established primary care physician—whether they are at the AFHC or a community office. It is important to maintain an ongoing relationship with your regular doctor so they understand your needs and can identify changes in your health.

  • Schedule your appointment several months in advance—don’t wait until the last minute! All doctor’s offices limit how many physicals they do each day because these appointments take longer than a regular visit. This means available appointments may be a few months after your inquiry date.

DID YOU KNOW... With your BMW Medical Plan, you do not have to wait 12 months after your last physical to be eligible for another exam. You can schedule an appointment at your convenience as long as it is a new year.

How to earn wellbeing points after your annual physical:

Points from your annual physical are NOT automatically uploaded to your wellbeing profile—even if you use the AFHC. Follow the steps below to make sure you get credit for your visit.

1. Log onto your account at www.bmwwellbeing.com or on the Navigate Wellbeing phone app.

2. On the homepage, locate the Annual Physical activity.

3. Click “Complete This” and answer two questions about the location and date of your appointment.

4. You’ll be asked for proof of your visit. We recommend taking a photo of your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from BCBS account or a verification letter from your doctor office which can include your after visit summary.

5. Click “Submit.” Your points will be uploaded immediately. You may need to refresh your browser or app before you see them reflected on your account.

Important! As of January 1, 2024, an annual physical OR a health check (biometric) is REQUIRED as 40 of your 100 wellbeing points to be eligible to receive the $500/$1000 wellbeing incentive. You only have to complete one but you are welcome to participate in both. Plan ahead and schedule in advance before time runs out!

New Year, New Wellbeing Updates!

The 2024 BMW Wellbeing. Your Way. Program is now underway! In 2024, we have made some changes to the requirements to earn your $500/$1000 wellbeing incentive.* Read on for more details.

*Benefit programs are reviewed annually and are subject to change by BMWMC.

New Requirement: 40 points must come from either a Health Check or Annual Physical.

Like in past years, you will still need to upload 100 wellbeing points by December 15 to be eligible for the Wellbeing incentive in 2025.* Now, if you do not complete either the Annual Physical or Health Check, as part of your 100 wellbeing points, you will NOT be eligible.

You should complete your Annual Physical with your established physician, whether they are at the Associate Family Health Center (AFHC) or at a community office. Your Health Check can be completed in Hall 50 or 52 or at the AFHC—see details below.

Important Note: you must manually record activities in your Wellbeing portal to earn points.

To earn wellbeing points for an activity, you must log on to your Wellbeing account and manually upload proof of participation. This includes visits captured at the AFHC, webinars, blood donations, volunteer events, and more.

PRO TIP: a “Complete This” button will indicate that you need to manually complete that activity. Simply click the button and follow the prompts to upload points. You will need to refresh your browser or app to see points reflected in your account after submission.

Remember to upload completed activities to earn 100 wellbeing points by December 15, 2024, to receive the $500/$1000 Wellbeing incentive in 2025.*

What is a Health Check?

Health checks help you identify your healthy behaviors and any undetected health issues or conditions that may need attention. The health check is a quick, 30-minute appointment where you will complete a health risk assessment survey while your screener administers a finger stick to check your cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and A1c levels. This information will then be used to create your personal health score report. Getting a yearly health check will allow you to track your score over time!

Health checks can be completed at several convenient locations on campus:

  • Hall 50 (IHS): Monday & Thursdays from 6 a.m. - 1 p.m.

  • Hall 52 (IHS): Tuesdays/Wednesdays from 6 a.m. - 1 p.m.

  • Associate Family Health Center: Monday - Friday

To schedule a health check appointment for any of these locations, please call 864-989-1432 (select option 1) or sign in to your MyPremise account and select “Biometric” while scheduling.

TIP: Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule appointments that earn points. As the December 15 deadline approaches, appointments fill up quickly! Even if you want to wait to complete the appointment later in the year, we recommend scheduling those appointments now before time runs out! The deadline falls on a SUNDAY this year—please plan appointments accordingly.

Get Ready for the 2nd Annual Back to School Bash!

As we enjoy warm weather and summer activities, we can’t help but get the nagging feeling that back to school season is fast approaching. Pretty soon, you will probably have more to-do items and shopping lists than you know what to do with—which often leads to unwanted stress.

The Associate Family Health Center (AFHC) would like to help you reduce some of this stress so you can enjoy the rest of the summer season with your family. To accomplish this, the AFHC will be hosting the 2nd Annual “Back to School Bash” on Saturday, August 5th from 8:00am—12:00pm. Drop in during this time and plan to spend an hour at the health center. This is an event the whole family can enjoy! Here’s what you can expect:

  • Healthy Beverage Demo

  • Raffle prizes

  • Visits with Disney/Pixar characters

  • Face Painting

  • And more!

  • Vision Screenings

  • Dental Screenings

  • Sports Physicals*

  • Vaccine Record Verification

  • COVID Vaccines Ages 12+*

  • Backpack Fittings

After visiting activities throughout the health center, you’ll be given FREE backpacks and school supplies for each of your school-aged dependents (while supplies last)! To register your family for the event, click here and fill out the quick survey. If you would like to make a vaccine or sports physical appointment, please call 864-989-1432 option 1. This event is open to BMW MC Associates and their Dependents enrolled in BMW HealthCare Plan.

New Trend Alert: Exercise Snacks

Let’s be honest—with our busy schedules, its hard to find time to exercise. To make matters worse, we often find ourselves sitting for long periods of time as well. Increased time spent sitting has been linked to weight gain, increased risk for heart disease and cancer, decreased memory, increased risk of depression, and more.

Here’s the good news: we can all benefit from even small amounts of exercise. Researchers are exploring a new concept called “exercise snacks” to break up long periods of sitting. Early research has shown that after a few weeks of using exercise snacks, people have seen improvement of cardiorespiratory fitness which lowers risk for heart disease and Type 2 Diabetes. They have also noticed better blood sugar control, better blood flow, and lower triglycerides.

Want to give exercise snacks a try? Choose an exercise to do for 15—30 seconds. A few exercise ideas are body weight squats, walking up stairs, jumping jacks, fast walking, etc. The idea is to do an exercise that gets your heart pumping and blood moving. Then, return to sitting and repeat every 1—4 hours (at least 3 snacks per day). It’s that simple.

It is important to talk with your doctor first before starting any new types of exercise, especially if you have existing conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes and have not been regularly exercising. You should also get clearance from your doctor first if you have any current injuries.

While exercise snacks don’t replace the recommendation to do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week, it can help out on days when getting to the gym is not an option. Early research has shown many positive benefits, especially when it comes to reducing time spent sitting. We hope this look at exercise snacks helps you realize that when it comes to exercise, something is always better than nothing.

Spring Has Sprung!

As we welcome back warmer temperatures and longer days, we also get to look forward to more choices of fruits and vegetables. It is no secret that these nutrient powerhouses make up an important part of our food choices. When we eat produce in their natural growing season, we call this “eating in season.” There are several benefits to eating fruits and vegetables in season. Here are a few examples:

  1. Better flavor and texture. You may notice your produce is more juicy.

  2. More vitamin and nutrient content because they are grown in their natural habitat.

  3. Less expensive! Plants in season will be more abundant which means reduced prices.

  4. Friendlier to the environment because growing in season requires less energy resources.

A great way to find fruits and vegetables that are in season is by visiting certifiedsc.com. Or check out a farmers market to shop from local farmers directly. There are several great farmers market options in the Greenville/Spartanburg area. Here are a few to get your started:

Am I Stressed?

April is Stress Awareness Month. A powerful connection exists between our minds and our bodies. You may have noticed that when you feel overwhelmed by responsibilities or problems in your personal or work life, you experience physical problems as well.

Think about a time in your life when you felt like you were carrying a heavy load: you were behind on your duties at work, you were having troubles in your relationships, or your family was fighting a lot. Maybe there was a death in the family, or you were struggling financially, and not sure how you could make ends meet. Now, think about how your body felt.

  • Did you notice a persistent headache?

  • Did your stomach hurt?

  • Did you feel too tired at times to even face the day?

  • Maybe you even got a skin rash.

See that connection? When we have a great deal of stress in our lives, it can affect the way we feel physically.

Through your Employee Assistance Program, you have access to five free visits with a behavioral health counselor. This is a great resource for identifying your causes of stress and receiving recommendations to manage a healthy stress level. Call 1-800-955-6422 (TTY: 711) to schedule your appointment.

Use the article below to check-in on your personal wellbeing.

  • Which wellbeing pillars are you doing well in? Which pillars do you want to work on? How will these impact your goals for 2023?

5 Pillars of Wellbeing—Taking Care of the Whole You

You have likely heard the term “wellness” many times. However, have you ever stopped to think about what wellness means? Think about wellness as completing activities and making choices that lead to reaching your fullest potential and living a life where you are thriving, not just surviving! This means wellness is much more than just your body’s physical health—it looks at many different areas of life that make you a whole person. At BMW, we refer to these areas of life as pillars.

There are 5 pillars of wellness that make up the BMW Wellbeing. Your Way Program: mind, body, finance, career, and community. Think of yourself as a building and each of these pillars serves as an important support to keep you standing. If you spend all of your time making one pillar strong, but do not work to make other pillars strong, the building will eventually collapse. Take a second to read the brief description of each pillar below and think about how each applies to your current lifestyle.

1) Mind: becoming aware of and understanding the thoughts and emotions of yourself and others.

2) Body: nourishing your body through nutrition, exercise, sleep, substance avoidance, etc.

3) Finance: learning skills to help take control of finances for security throughout your life.

4) Career: developing professional goals while finding enrichment and satisfaction in your work roles.

5) Community: volunteering time to help those in need and improving your community.

One of the BMW Wellbeing. Your Way Program’s goals is to help you explore each of these pillars in your life and provide opportunities for you to grow into a happy, whole person—where all pillars of wellness are equally strong and supportive. In the new year, we encourage you to consider participating in this free program not only for the flex credit perk, but to learn practical ways to grow your personal wellbeing. Look for opportunities listed on the Daily News and Wellbeing Portal as well as offerings at the Associate Family Health Center.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused financial uncertainty for many families. If you got off track, it’s okay – these simple rules for saving and spending can be your first step toward gaining financial stability today and maintaining your lifestyle in retirement. Remember the 50/15/5 rule when planning your budget and deciding where your money goes:

  • 50% - Essential Expenses. These are things you cannot get by without including housing, food, transportation, childcare, and health care. While these may be essential, they can be flexible. One tip for reducing housing costs is to turn the thermostat down a bit in the winter and up in the summer.

  • 15% - Retirement Savings. This is a pretax target and includes any contribution your employer makes. One tip to save for retirement is to increase your savings gradually until you’ve reached your goal. Even 1% annually can make a big difference.

  • 5% - Short-Term Savings. This is a safety net in case you have an unexpected expense that doesn’t qualify as a true emergency. This may be something like a flat tire or a roof repair. One tip to build this without being tempted to spend it is to have this money deducted automatically into a separate savings account from your paycheck.

With your remaining income, you may save and spend as you see fit. This may be used to help pay down high-interest debt or save for other goals such as vacation, college, or a wedding.

Did you know…

A single blood donation saves up to three lives.

  • Someone in the U.S. needs blood every 2 seconds.

  • There is no substitution for blood when you need more.

  • Approximately 40% of the blood collected goes to cancer patients.

  • The Blood Connection is the only community blood bank in the Upstate. They supply 100% of blood products needed by Upstate hospitals.

  • Donating with The Blood Connection saves lives in your immediate community.

  • Over 800 people in our community need to donate blood each day to supply local hospitals.

More than ever, with ongoing emergency blood shortages, it is important to think about giving back to your community by donating blood. Thanks to our partners at The Blood Connection, Team 10 members can give lifesaving blood without having to leave campus. The last BMW blood drive of the year is Thursday, November 10th! Buses will be parked in Lot A, C, D, and the SOC. As a bonus, The Blood Connection provides incentive items to donors and BMW associates receive 10 wellbeing incentive points when they upload proof of donation to the Wellbeing Portal. Announcements and sign-up links will be posted in the Daily News and on the Wellbeing Portal in the event tab.

Wellbeing at BMW - Summer Edition, 2022

Have You Completed Your 2022 Health Screen Yet?

The deadline to earn 100 wellbeing incentive points and qualify for flex credits in 2023 is December 15, 2022. Popular point-earning activities, like health checks, are worth 40 points, and these appointments fill up fast as the December deadline approaches. Get a head start and schedule your appointment today. To schedule, call the AFHC at 864-989-1432 option 1 or sign in to your MyPremise Portal at https://www.mypremisehealth.com/MyChart/. Here are a few frequently asked questions to help you learn more about health check appointments:

Q: What is a health check?

A: A health check is a quick, 30-minute appointment that gives you a snapshot of your current health status. You will complete a health risk assessment survey while your screener administers a finger stick to test your cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and A1c levels. You do not need to be fasting prior to your health check. We do recommend avoiding meals with high fat or sugar content prior to your appointment.

Q: What is the benefit of yearly health checks?

A: When the assessment is completed, you will get a report that includes your current health “score” and recommended areas to work on to improve results. Your screener will also refer you to different services available through your benefits at the AFHC to help manage any areas of concern.

Q: Where do I go for my health check appointment?

A: You will have the option to schedule your health check onsite, such as Hall 50 or 52, or at the AFHC. If you schedule for a Hall, your screener will send a message to your MyPremise account the week before your appointment with instructions on where to go for your appointment. Please note, the reminder you receive prior to your appointment will have the AFHC address listed. If you scheduled an onsite location, your appointment will still be in the Hall you selected, even if the address on the reminder does not match. If you need assistance setting-up your MyPremise account, please call the AFHC at the number listed above.

Q: When will points appear on my wellbeing portal account after completing a health check?

A: After completing your health screen, your 40 points may take up to 3-4 weeks to appear on your Wellbeing Portal account.
